When looking at a master’s degree for English and teaching, you first must determine which level you are already at, and where you intend to go. If you haven’t gotten a bachelor’s degree yet, you will need to begin at the beginning. Most, if not all, schools require you to have a bachelor’s degree before you begin a master’s program. Therefore, if you don’t have a bachelor’s degree, you will need to start with a four-year program.
If you want to get a master’s degree in English and teaching, you should start with a bachelor’s degree in English or education, or pursue a double major in both. It is important to look first at the master’s degree program at the school where you would like to study. This is because at some schools, a master’s degree in English and teaching can be pursued after obtaining an associate’s, or two-year degree. In some schools, you can begin with no college experience, and work toward a master’s in English and teaching, picking up a bachelor’s degree along the way.
A master’s degree in a program that offers a joint English and teaching degree will take you from two to four years to complete. Usually, this includes a final semester in which a master’s thesis is written.
At colleges where you would have to get a master’s in English and a master’s in teaching at the same time, it is going to take you more years to complete both. Generally, a master’s in English would take two years, if you are going to school full-time. A master’s in teaching would take two years, going full time. Therefore, if you are attempting to get both a master’s in teaching and a master’s in English at the same time, you can expect to be working full-time for at least three years to complete both programs.
